Chapter One "Hey Cowboy, whats going on," my partner asked as she poked her head from behind her computer. I just got in the office and put down some coffee and Tasty Tart donuts. "Not much," I replied back to her. "You working on anything good there?" She looked up at me and rolled her eyes. "You know I hate filing out reports on the computer. Why do I always have to do it?" "Your the rookie," I told her and gave her a slap on the back. "C'mon Bonnie, lets go for a ride." "You've got it Clyde." We took off in our cruiser and started our normal beat downtown just like we did almost every day. The first they took was one of the very first streets built in the city. Some of the old shops were run down and abandoned but for the most part it was pretty nice. The side walks had old London style lamp posts, sweet smelling trees and flowers still were planted along it, and the benches were made of oak that had a cherry red coat to it. I would always get my hair cut at this barber shop thats been there since I was a kid. The same man that cut my hair then still does now. At the end of this street was the nieghborhood I grew up in. Not one of the safest places to be walking around or living in for that matter. Most of our calls came from there and I was hoping that this day I wouldn't have to go and make an unwelcome visit. Too bad that I dont have much of good luck. "Unit nine, this is base do you copy, over," came a voice over the radio. "This is unit nine, send your traffic base, over," Olivia had grabbed the radio before I did. It was always a race between us for some reason. She looked over and smiled at me after she spoke and made this kinda funny face that little kids make at the play ground. Like "ha ha, it's mine, you can't touch" ya know. "Unit nine, we just recieved a 911 emergency call from a Mr. Bart Aelle at one one three two East King Street appartment number four B as in bravo, over" Olivia looked at me before she responed. I nodded at here and she told dispatch we were on our way. It was only a few minutes away so it wasn't a big deal. "What is the call regarding, over," Olivia asked. "The man claims he is seeing somebody walk in and out of his walls, over," the dispatcher sounded like he was using a sarcastic tone. Oliva looked confused for a moment and didn't know how to respond. She looked at me again like I knew the answer. I was probably even more confused than she was. "You mean the mans house is getting robbed while he is in it, over," she asked then bit her lip as she ussually does when she feels a bit lost. "No.... He says they are ghosts or something, dispatch out." The radio went back to the normal chatter heard on the box. Other officers, dispatch calling units, and the nieghbors against crime members who occasionally report thing that they see. "Oh this I want," I smirked at her. "This will bring an end to this boring streak. A guy seeing ghosts in his house calls us. I would call a priest." "Right. How much you wanna put down to see who's gonna laugh first?" Olivia asked with assurity that it would be him, and stuck her hand out to shake on it. "Five bucks says its you." "Allright. My five says its you," he shook her hand and gave her a glare that just spelled out I'm going to win.. "Your on Nate. Im gonna take you down," she laughed. A few minutes later we were at the address. From the moment I pulled in the drive way I could here someone screaming. Olivia and I jumped out of the car and hid behind our doors with guns drawn. I was listening closer and I could tell that it was more than one voice yelling. It wasn't just Mr. Aelle and I easily indentified his screams for help while the others were raging and threatening. This may have been more than what we came for and I wasn't feeling like having a shoot out that day. I grabed the loud speaker and looked at Olivia and nodded to the rear of our patrol car to get the rifles out. She nodded in understanding and went back to get them. "This is the police," I spoke through the loud speaker. "Come out of the house with your hands above your head." Olivia got the rifles and brought one over to me and went back over to the other side of the car behind her door. We pointed our weapons over the doors and waited for someone to come out. After a minute no body exited the building and we could still hear the shouts. That's all it was though, just shouting. It didn't seem like there was any violence or if they had any weapons themselves. I decided it would probably be okay if I were to get closer to the house and looked around the area for places I could run to and hide behind. There was a rose bush in front of the porch and then nothing until the door. "Hey, you stay hear." I said to Olivia. "Im going to go for the door. See if I can hear more of whats going on in there." "Allright. Be carefull." "You know me." "Exactely," she said with a smile. I took one last look around and then bolted towards the bush and took a knee behind it. Aiming at the door and looking over the sight like we were taught in training I searched and assesed the front of the building slowly from the far left to the right looking in every window. As far as I could tell there wasn't any bodies in those front rooms, so I took a deep breath and ran up to the door and stood with my back to the door frame as close as I could to it. I pounded on the door three times with my boot. "This is the police," I yelled. "Mr. Aelle, come to the the door now. You will be safe." After less than a minutes time and not hearing foot steps coming to the door, I made the choice to go in. I reached for the door knob and it was locked. I turned around and took a half step back giving me just enough room to knock the door in. While cocking my rifle, I shifted my wieght to my rear leg and then shifted back and kicked the door with as much power that I could. As it swung open I held the rifle up and aimed over the sight and ran in and checked my fatal front before moving into the living room on the left, then swept the room for any contacts before kneeling in the far corner. I swept the room and the ceiling before I decided my next room. Down the hall, I could hear some one running towards my position so I aimed my rifle at the door waiting for him to come through. The man that came though the door was a thin, wirey guy who looked like he hadn't shaved, aten or bathed for several days. He was wearing dirty gray slacks and a stained white shirt, and one of the lenses of his glasses were broken. "Mr. Aelle," I asked. "Is that you?" "We must get out of here now," he spoke as if we were in a war zone. His eyes were wide with fear and the color seemed to be draining from his body. "Please sir." "Allright," I agreed. "Let's get out of here. Is the hall clear?" The man looked and then nodded. There was something strange about him I could tell you that, but what it was I couldn't really tell. He really believed that there was something in his house which by the sounds of it there was. I still heard the other voices but it sounded so distant that you would think it wasn't even there at all. As soon as I made it to the hall where I had first come in to the house, Mr. Aelle looked away and I could see fear growing in his eyes. That's when I saw him, or I thought I saw him. I really couldn't tell what I was seeing. A man slowly coming towards us but he wasn't really walking on the floor. His feet were moving across it yet he wasn't touching the ground. When I looked at him, I could see through him. Not though him like I can see whats behind him but I could see inside of him, every little muscle and through that the blood that flowed through him to the very atoms it self. I held up my rifle at this person and tried not to look to deep into what he was. "Stop right there," I yelled at him. "Mr. Aelle, go outside to my car. Tell my partner to stay there and call for back up." "You wont survive. Come with me," He pleaded. "GO," I screamed. "NOW! I'LL BE FINE!" The force in my voice must have scared Mr. Aelle than that strange person had because he backed away and turned around and was out the door before I knew he was gone. I would have to if that thing was in my house. It kept coming closer to me and I felt as though I was getting closer to it withought even moving. I was mezmorized by what I was see, or what I wasn't see, I dont know which but I couldn't even move because of it no matter how hard I tried to look away and fight it. It was too strong of a power and I could feel my self melting at its awesome yet disgusting beauty. Then for a moment I regained my composure and shot at it and reloaded and shot again and the bullets did nothing except dissapear in a shimmer before it even touched him. Now I was myself and in control and I backed up and tried again several times with no luck. It was a dream I told my mind. It had to be and I just had to wake up. Why wasn't I waking up, I kept asking in my head. Why? "What are you," I asked it. "I AM EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE, AND EVERY TIME." It's voice, if you could call it that, was everywhere. It was like it was all around me. Vibrating around me and entering my body so that not only my ears could hear it but every bone in body would know that it existed and was real. Now I knew it wasn't a dream. No dream I ever had felt this real or even came close. Then it came face to face with me and I could see all of history through its eyes. It was there for the creation of the universe, the evolution of man, the rise and fall of every great empire there ever was, the dark ages, the renisience, the American Revolution, the abolishment of slavery, and everything that was of great significance to the history of the world. It was there. And then I saw the future or our world and the past and future of worlds that did not exist to me. What was this that I was seeing? I was helpless to it. I had to succomb to its powers. My mouth opened to speak but nothing would come out as if the sound was drained from my body. "COME WITH ME," It said in its powerfull voice. "I BRING GOOD NEW TO YOU." With those words, I was gone. Gone from that house, the earth, and time itself. I was nowhere and everywhere all at once. |
